Once again we have reached the most solemn time in the Church’s year, and again we try to find appropriate ways in which to celebrate the Paschal mystery. In particular, we try to find ways of including the younger members of the congregation without impoverishing the liturgies.

This year our Palm Sunday service (13th April) will be held in Finglas church at 11 a.m. and will be all-age in format. Hopefully the weather will be kind and let us have our palm procession out-of-doors. The only donkey present will be the rector… After the reading of the Gospel of the Palms we will sing our way into church waving our branches and leaves. The main part of the service will be the dramatic reading of the Passion, the congregation taking the crowd parts. We will respond to the story with prayers and hymns. To keep the length of the service within humane bounds, we will omit the eucharist this year.

The main Eucharistic celebration will take place on Thursday evening, 8 p.m. in Finglas, the commemoration of the Last Supper. Attendance at this service is usually quality rather than quantity; it would be good to see a few more at this lovely part of Holy Week.

Good Friday we are making a little experiment, because we want to involve the children without losing the richness of the traditional psalms and lessons. Our main service will be held in the morning in Glasnevin church at 10.30 a.m. The Service of Readings will present the familiar passages from Isaiah 53 and Hebrews, along with the Passion psalm 22, and the beginning of the St John Passion. This should take 20 minutes or so. After a little break, to allow (hopefully) families to enter, we will begin the all-age  Service of the Cross at 11 a.m. We will have the familiar hymns, an informal “Way of the Cross” walking around the church, the final portion of the St John Passion, and the prayers – all to be over by 11.45, we hope.

In Santry at 8 p.m., we will have a  form of Evening Prayer with hymns and sermon, to finish off the day’s reflections.

The churches will be decorated on Holy Saturday, in readiness for the Easter Day eucharist and renewal of baptismal vows: Santry at 10, Finglas and Glasnevin at 11.30. Thank you in advance to all who will help with readings, music and flowers for the festival.
